Extremely nice and very rare zinc Erkennungsmarke from a recruit in the 2./SS-Ersatz-Bataillon "Nord".
This replacement unit was initially formed as SS-Totenkopf-Ersatz-Bataillon "A" in Goslar in September 1940. One year later, it moved to Wehlau near Königsberg in East Prussia. It was renamed into SS-Ersatz-Bataillon "Nord" at that time. It only stayed here for a rather short time, because in March 1942 the battalion moved to Trautenau in Czechia. There it was renamed into SS-Gebirgsjäger-Ausbildungs-und-Ersatz-Bataillon, before it got its final unit designation in May 1943: SS-Gebirgsjäger-Ausbildungs-und-Ersatz-Bataillon 6, which was based in Hallein in Austria until the end of the war. Because of these changing unit designations, we can safely conclude that these SS-E.Btl. "Nord" tags were issued in late 1941 and early 1942.
This tag was found many years ago in Karelia, on positions of the 6. SS-Gebirgs-Division "Nord", and is in great condition with the text clearly readable.
We don't know the owner's name, but it can be researched further. A textbook tag of a rare unit.
We have only seen a handful of these tags, all with the same interesting font and stamping.
Super nice tag.
