A very nice and very well-preserved zinc Erkennungsmarke from the 5./SS-Feld-Ausbildings-Bataillon "Wiking", the field training battalion of the "Wiking" division.

This unit suffered a lot of casualties during the break-out of the Cherkassy pocket on 16 February 1944. Some years ago, a grouping of these tags, all belonging to the 5./SS-Feld-Ausbildungs-Bataillon "Wiking" and all with a similar number, was found there.

It might have been a grouping of tags which were not issued yet, and were thrown away in February 1944.

In any case, it is a rare and original "Wiking" tag in stellar condition for a ground-found exemplar.
