Wonderful, sharp-looking zinc Erkennungsmarke from a recruit in the 1. Ausbildungs-Kompanie of Gebirgsjäger-Ersatz-Bataillon I./98.
This unit was formed as Gebirgsjäger-Ersatz-Bataillon 98 on 26 August 1939 in Mittenwald, Germany. The battalion provided replacements for the 1. Gebirgs-Division.
On 15 January 1940, the battalion was redesignated as Gebirgsjäger-Ersatz-Bataillon I./98. This became necessary because, almost simultaneously, a Gebirgsjäger-Ersatz-Bataillon II./98 was formed in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Later on, both units were based in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
On 20 July 1944, Gebirgsjäger-Ersatz-Bataillon I./98 was expanded into Gebirgsjäger-Ersatz-und-Ausbildungs-Bataillon 98. The tag itself is in perfect condition with a very nice sharp inprint of the text.
Desirable and good-looking Gebirgsjäger tag.
