German tank number plate, Smolensk, grey and yellow paint
We offer plate from a German tank (Pz. III or IV), which was found in the village of Jemeljanovka near Smolensk.
At the beginning of the war, tank numbers were small white markings on rhomboidal shaped number plates on the sides of the tank, but as a consequence were harder to see for commanders. The numbers were then placed on metal plates in the shape of a parallelogram. These were to be placed on both sides and the rear of the tank.
Even-numbered regiments were to have yellow numbers and odd-numbered regiments were to have white numbers.
On this plate a patch of grey paint with traces of the yellow number survives in the middle.
Truly unique pieces for the tank part collector.
