- LSSAH mess tin from Kharkov
Fantastic and super rare LSSAH marked aluminum mess tin. The LSSAH was formed in 1933 as the Stabswache, later renamed into Adolf Hitler Standarte, and then in November 1933 into Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. It grew from an original strength of 120 men in 1933 to a regiment of 2,531 men in 1934.
The LSSAH was issued its own marked equipment in this period, like mess tins and canteens. All this equipment was made by Eduard Sommerfeld in Berlin (ESB) in 1934, which was the only accepted maker. This particular mess tin was found near Kharkov in Ukraine, where the 1. SS-Panzer-Division "LSSAH" was fighting in 1942 and 1943.
Unfortunately, the cover is missing, as well as the handle, but the mess tin itself is in very good condition with the markings very clearly visible.
It is beyond rare to find LSSAH marked equipment and we are proud we can offer such a piece, from a famous battlefield. This mess tin was issued in 1934 to a LSSAH member and lost on the battlefield eight or nine years later. We could only imagine what it all witnessed.
