Wound Badge in Black - Condor Legion Pattern

An original Wound Badge in Black (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz) of the early Condor Legion pattern, instituted in 1938 for German personnel wounded in the Spanish Civil War and continued in production into the earliest period of the Second World War. This first-pattern type is considerably scarcer than the later standardized 1939 issue and is accordingly sought after.

The badge is hollow; much of the original black lacquered finish has worn through with age and handling, exposing the copper-toned base metal beneath. The detail remains crisp throughout, with the wreath, helmet, and pebbling all well defined.

A solid example of one of the earlier and more difficult-to-find wound badge patterns.
