Rare zinc Erkennungsmarke from a member of the Lettisches SS-Grenzschutz-Regiment 3, which was formed on 7 February 1944 in Riga in Latvia.
On July 1, 1944, the regiment had a strength of 2,775 Latvian volunteers. It was placed under the command of the 15th Latvian division in the same month and took up defensive positions near Krasnoye, where it engaged in defensive fighting on July 10, covering the 15th Latvian division's retreat to Zilupi.
It suffered heavily, with hundreds of soldiers missing in action. In August 1944, the remaining troops were absorbed into Waffen-Grenadier-Regiment der SS 32, which was part of the 15th Latvian Division.
The tag itself is corroded, but solid, with parts of the text still readable.
It is completely textbook and a rare tag to come across.
Interesting foreign volunteer tag.
